A mere 40 minutes by air from Bangkok, Siem Reap is home to the stunning Angkor Temples, including Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. These incredible structures, some over 1,000 years old, should be on everyone’s bucket list and you could spend a lifetime examining the massive temples and the intricate stone carvings and learning about their history.
More importantly (!), from our point of view, Siem Reap is also home to 3 excellent golf courses: The Angkor Golf Resort, designed by Sir Nick Faldo; Phokeethra CC, managed by Sofitel and host of numerous Asian Tour events and the newest course in town, the Korean-owned Siem Reap Booyoung CC (formerly Siem Reap Lake Resort). All are well-conditioned, challenging layouts with all the usual top-class amenities associated with golf in SE Asia and all are within easy driving distance from town.
For after golf there are numerous excellent restaurants and bars located in the center of town either in, or close to, the aptly named Pub Street. Multiple night markets displaying local goods are also close by and within easy walking distance. Locals are very friendly and most of them speak some English. The US$ is the most commonly used currency and a good meal with drinks for 2 at a top class restaurant will cost you around US$ 30.-. A draught beer can be had for less than US$ 1.- in some places. So, prices are very reasonable, to say the least. All in all, whether you are looking for a unique destination to add on to a trip to Thailand or a 3-4 day golf trip on its own, Siem Reap, with its wonderful temples, good golf and inexpensive nightlife is well worth a visit.
